The history

The story of the source and Farris Bad

100.000 years of ice age shaped the moraine on witch Larvik and Norway’s largest beech forest rests on. 10.000 years ago, the ice drew back, and the water trickled through the rock masses and gathered into a purified, nutritious source.

In 1843, Karen Linaae established the first bath on this source. In 1880, Dr. Ingebrigt Holm founded a new bath. Here came Ibsen and Bjørnson, Lagerlöf and Hamsun. Here they lived, here they bathed, here they danced. And soon the bubbling, health-giving water from Larvik was known throughout Europe.

The story of the new Farris Bath

Farris Bad as such is historical and the location is still the same. The mighty sea still strikes our beaches – and the source is the same.

Already in 1990, the first thoughts about a hotel at Batteristranden were launched by Mille Marie Treschow. When the construction started in 2007, it was after many years of struggle for building permits.

On March 5th, 2009, Farris Bad opened a spa hotel with 176 rooms and suites, 2500 sqm spa and conference facilities for up to 400 people.

With one foot on land and one foot in the sea, with one foot in history, and one foot in the future.

The most beautiful SPA in the Nordic region

We are the Nordic region’s largest and most content spa department of over 2500 sqm, and is the only hotel that has established its spa on a genuine, mineral source. Experience true and clean spring water when you visit us.

Every day, fresh spring water from 55 meters deep swirls into our spring water cave – nutritious, health-giving. The water travels for twenty years on its journey through the cleansing moraine masses under the beech forest and into Farris Bad.

Our spa focuses on physical and mental exercise, balanced diet and treatments. Here you will find outer and inner peace. Visit some of our 19 treatment rooms where we offer everything from classic massages to Hamam and Rhassoul.

Kneip’s method is our mantra. We want you to experience the warmth and the cold element. Combining hot saunas, steam baths and pools, with cold ice fountains, showers and cold pits, will provide a preventative and health-promoting effect. Experience real ice baths in the fjord during the winter or the sea bath for the rest of the year.
