100,000 years of ice age formed the moraine on which Larvik and Norway's largest beech forest rest. 10,000 years ago, the ice retreated, and water trickled through the rocks, gathering in a purified, nutrient-rich source. In 1843, Karen Linaae established the first bath at this source, and in 1880, Dr. Ingebrigt Holm founded a new bath. Ibsen, Bjørnson, Lagerlöf, and Hamsun visited here. They stayed, bathed, ate, and danced. Soon, the bubbling, healthful water from Larvik became known throughout Europe.

Establishment of Farris Bad Spa Hotel

The sea still crashes onto the beaches of Larvik, and the mineral spring remains the same.

Already in 1990, the first ideas for a hotel at Batteristranden were introduced by Mille Marie Treschow. When construction began in 2007, it followed many years of struggles for building permits. On March 5, 2009, Farris Bad spa hotel opened its 176 rooms and suites, 2500 sqm spa, and conference facilities for up to 400 people.
