Authentic experience

Party night "Viking style"

Experience an authentic party night in the Viking hall “Gildehallen” at Midgard Viking Center.

The housewife and the chieftain are your hosts for the evening, serving a tapas buffet with period-appropriate dishes made from locally sourced ingredients. Various meat dishes, fish, pea and cabbage stew, salad, and more provide an authentic experience.

A bonfire in the middle of the hall warms the room, but it is still recommended to bring/wear warm clothing. Duration: 3–4 hours (as desired).

The Beech Forest "Bøkeskogen"

A short stroll from the hotel, you'll find Bøkeskogen in Larvik – Norway's largest and northernmost beech forest. It is a very popular hiking area with beautiful trails and stunning views of the Larvik fjord. The forest, covering around 300 acres, is a nature reserve and offers a rich variety of wildlife and plant life. In spring, it is especially beautiful when the light green beech leaves begin to bud.

Bøkeskogen also has historical significance, with burial mounds from the Bronze Age and Iron Age. These burial mounds testify that the area has been used as a burial site for over 3,000 years. During the Iron Age, it was an important cultural site where people buried their dead under large stone mounds, often alongside personal belongings. The burial fields in Bøkeskogen are among the largest of their kind in Norway, offering a unique insight into prehistoric burial customs and societal structures. This makes the forest not only a picturesque hiking area but also an important cultural-historical site.

The Nerdrum Museum

The renowned Norwegian classical painter Odd Nerdrum’s paintings and works are visually accessible to the general public at the Nerdrum Museum. The museum also shares knowledge about his life and career, with a special focus on classical figurative painting.

Through the permanent exhibition in the Pipe House at Agnes in Stavern, the breadth and highlights of the artist’s production over more than half a century are showcased. The Nerdrum Museum also functions as a cultural center, hosting concerts, conferences, events, and lectures.

No original works from the museum's collection, including paintings, sketches, drawings, and graphics, are for sale: the works are reserved for public interest and to be preserved as part of Norway's public cultural heritage.

Edvard Munch's house

One of Norway's most famous artists, Edvard Munch (1863–1944), has a special connection to our local area. It was in 1889 that Munch spent the first of many summers in Åsgårdstrand. In 1898, he bought a house built in the late 1700s. The house is now a small museum, open to the public, where everything is preserved as it was when the artist lived there.

The original studio building has been demolished, but a new building has been erected on the same site.

Edvard Munch painted many of his masterpieces in Åsgårdstrand, including The Girls on the Bridge, Four Girls in Åsgårdstrand, and The Dance of Life. These works are now displayed in major international art galleries.

In collaboration with Munch's house in Åsgårdstrand, the Munch Museum has published a travel guide to all of Munch's locations. The book provides information about viewpoints and experiences, so you can follow in his footsteps.

Thor Heyerdahl

Thor Heyerdahl (1914–2002) was a Norwegian explorer, author, and scientist who grew up at Steingata 7 in Larvik, close to Farris Bad. From his room, he had an inspiring sea view over the Larvik fjord – just like from the hotel.

Heyerdahl is best known for his expeditions that challenged established theories about early human migration. His most famous expedition was the Kon-Tiki expedition in 1947, where he and his crew sailed a balsawood raft from Peru to Polynesia to prove that people could have crossed the Pacific Ocean in prehistoric times. Later, he undertook expeditions with reed boats Ra and Tigris to investigate ancient sea routes. Heyerdahl wrote several books and was a passionate advocate for environmental conservation and cultural understanding.

The Thor Heyerdahl Museum presents his life and research. You can join guided tours of his childhood home on Thursdays during the summer season.

The Manor House

The Manor House in Larvik is one of Norway's best-preserved baroque buildings and an important cultural monument. The building was erected in 1677 by the viceroy and count Ulrik Fredrik Gyldenløve, who was the viceroy of Norway and an illegitimate son of King Christian IV. The manor was built as his residence and served as a symbol of his power and status.

The magnificent building was used for many years as a residence for various counts in Larvik and has been a center for both administration and culture.

The manor has a distinct, symmetrical design with a large courtyard. The interior is richly decorated with original furniture, paintings, and wallpapers, offering a glimpse into the aristocratic lifestyle of the 1600s and 1700s.

Today, it functions as a museum, where visitors can experience the history and architecture from Larvik's heyday.
